First United Methodist Church of Gainesville was built in 1891, but in 2008 the exterior of the building was in need of extensive repairs.  The original wood structure was rotted, termite-ridden, and in danger of collapse. Exterior brick was removed and a new steel structure inserted into the stud space.  Complex decorative metal coping shapes were replaced or restored. The church is listed by the Texas Historical Commission as a State Historical Landmark.
