St. Joseph Catholic Church includes worship space seating 1,600 people, a chapel seating over 200, classrooms, a resource library, nursery and offices.
St. Joseph Parish was worshiping in the gymnasium of their multi-purpose building when Selzer Associates was selected to design their new worship space and create a master plan incorporating adjacent property. Working with a liturgical consultant, the schematic design process involved multiple meetings with members of the congregation to determine the needs of the parish. Common to every congregational group was a desire for a friendly, welcoming worship space where people saw smiling faces when coming to Mass. To meet this need, Selzer Associates reversed the traditional entrance sequence into a church. Passing by a natural boulder from which water flows into baptismal pools, worshipers enter around a screening wall behind the altar to see the faces of those who are already gathered for Mass. Soaring interior spaces flooded with natural light complete the open, friendly feeling of the worship space.
The parish’s emphasis on congregational fellowship was also reflected in an expansive narthex that provides a large open space for the parishioners to gather after Mass.
